A day dedicated to the power of geospatial data!
On the occasion of World GIS Day, the GIS Research Unit of the Agricultural University of Athens opens its doors and highlights the decisive role that Geographic Information Systems play in modern agriculture, research, and education.
In today’s world, where spatial data forms the foundation for evidence-based decision-making, GIS technologies offer capabilities that enhance:
• precise monitoring and assessment of production,
• sustainable management of natural resources,
• analysis of environmental and agronomic parameters,
• spatiotemporal planning of actions,
• and support for research and innovation across the agri-food sector.
The GIS Research Unit of AUA, leveraging its long-standing research activity, has developed important geospatial infrastructures, tools, and applications that support faculty members, students, laboratories, and research teams at every stage of their work—from data visualization to advanced spatial analysis.
What’s happening for GIS DAY:
🔹 Wednesday 19 & Thursday 20 November – The GIS Unit will be open for tours, information sessions, and demonstrations of new capabilities and available infrastructures. The Unit is located in the basement of the Main Building.
🔹 A large number of ArcGIS licenses are available to faculty members, students, researchers, and laboratories.
🔹 The Unit’s staff is available to assist anyone wishing to visualize data or perform spatial analysis in ArcGIS or QGIS.
🔹 A series of free GIS seminars for the university community will be announced soon.
🔹 The Unit is preparing to release open geospatial datasets through its web GIS servers, offering easy access to high-quality content for research and teaching.
A video below presents the history, evolution, and contribution of the GIS Research Unit to the agricultural sector and to our University.
