The GIS Research Unit of the Agricultural University of Athens is organizing a competition to highlight the best undergraduate thesis/dissertation and the best postgraduate thesis/dissertation, within the framework of the 6th Conference on Geographic Information Systems and Spatial Analysis in Agriculture and the Environment.
The aim of the competition is to showcase and reward outstanding theses that utilize Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Spatial Analysis, and Geospatial Technologies to understand, analyze, and address contemporary challenges in agriculture, the environment, and sustainable development.
Submitted works should include the development, use, or application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and, more broadly, geospatial technologies and spatial analysis methods in the following (indicative and not restrictive) thematic areas:
Agriculture
Environment & Sustainable Development
Climate Change and Environmental Impacts
Natural Disasters (floods, wildfires, drought, etc.)
Natural Resource Management
Environmental Monitoring & Analysis
Resilience of agricultural and natural systems
Spatial analysis and modeling of environmental phenomena
Particular emphasis will be given to innovative use of GIS, the utilization of open geospatial data, as well as the connection of research with real-world needs and applications.
The competition is open to:
Undergraduate and postgraduate theses completed within the last two years (May 2024 – May 2026)
Graduates from Higher Education Institutions, not limited to the Agricultural University of Athens
Works thematically related to GIS, agriculture, environment, sustainability, and climate
Submissions will be evaluated by a scientific committeebased on:
The scientific quality of the work
The originality and innovation of the approach
The proper and meaningful use of GIS
The applicability and overall scientific and social value of the work
The winners of the Competition A monetary Cash Prize of €500
The announcement of the winners will take place during the 6th Conference on Geographic Information Systems and Spatial Analysis in Agriculture and the Environment.

The competition aspires to become an institution for promoting new scientific knowledge and to strengthen the role of geospatial technologies in agriculture and the environment.
